    Sacral Chakra

    Updated: Jun 6

In our previous blog we discussed the root chakra – providing stability and security – and used the images of Deborah Koff-Chapin’s soul cards to illustrate the root chakra. Continuing with these intuitive cards, we move from the root to connect to the sacral energy centre, located below the belly button in the lower abdomen; the seat of your emotional well-being and creative energy.

The sacral is said to be the home of your power centre. It oversees your ability to experience the fullness of life. It has a strong energetic link to the reproductive organs and sexuality and connects us to our creativity, emotions, intuition, pleasure, and relationships.

    Balance of the Sacral

When in balance, you feel aligned with your desires and passions, you experience pleasure in many forms, and you’re able to move through life with ease and flow. It’s associated with the water element. As we witness the effortless flow of water we are reminded of the fluid and adaptable nature of the sacral, and our creative flow in life.

    Blocked Sacral

When the sacral is blocked or imbalanced, you might feel emotionally unstable, creatively stifled, or disconnected from your sensual-self. Unresolved feelings of guilt or shame around sexuality and intimacy, can result in an imbalance in this energy centre. It might show as fear of vulnerability, or a lack of sexual desire, feeling disconnected from intimacy. Other signs of a blocked sacral are feelings of emotional overwhelm or numb; difficulty experiencing joy or creativity, creative blocks and or feeling uninspired.

Stagnant energy within the sacral may show up in women’s health issues like endometriosis, fibroids, vaginitis, low libido, painful or irregular menstruation and shame or disconnect from the womb or one’s body.

    Balancing the Sacral

Just like with the root chakra, balancing the sacral chakra requires some intentional practices that can help clear stagnant energy and restore flow. These might include:

    Movement:

5 Rhythms is a powerful movement practice that can support the opening and balancing of the sacral chakra. For more on 5 rhythms click here. These rhythms help us to reconnect with our creative, sensual and emotional selves. Out of the 5 rhythms flowing and staccato are most directly related to the sacral energy centre.

Movement in general can be very powerful –  hip rotations, figure eights with the hips, pelvic thrusts or tilts, undulations through the spine and pelvis, swaying from side to side with soft knees – all of these movements can help shift energy and enable flow.

    Dance

There are many dance styles that facilitate the flow of energy in the sacral involving the hips, pelvis, and lower abdomen – where this chakra lives.

    • Belly dancing

    • Twerking

    • Salsa dancing

    • Hula dance

    Yoga

Yoga is rich in sacral asanas. My personal favourite is happy baby pose. Start by lying on your back, bend your knees into your chest and separate the feet and knees wide, holding on to the inner edges of the feet. This helps release tension and improve energy flow in the sacral, promoting a sense of balance and harmony.

    Water

Water-based activities – swimming, for instance – can help stimulate the energy in the sacral. Drinking water mindfully, taking baths, or spending time near water (rivers, oceans) can help align and balance the sacral energy.

    Creative expression

Journaling is one of the most easy and simple forms of creative expression. Grab a notebook and pen and journal your dreams, your thoughts and reflections. Any form of artistic creation will support the flow of energy in this energy centre.

    Find What Balances You

Try a few of these. Be curious. Maybe set and intention, to invite flow into this sacred area before you start. Bring your awareness back to your hips and lower abdomen and connect to this well of feminine energy and power.
