The Mayans have a tradition dating back to their ancestors long before the Spanish invasion.
When a guest has travelled from afar to visit, they are greeted with a bowl of cacao. The cacao is intended to replenish and rejuvenate the traveller. Nourishing and replacing the nutrients depleted on the journey. The host presents the cacao with the greeting “chocola” which in Mayan language translates to “welcome”.
On hearing this greeting and seeing a bowl of cacao being presented, and not understanding the custom, the Spanish invaders assumed the content of the bowl was chocola. Mayan folklore tells us that this is where the word chocolate comes from.
